Instructors review how to draw a margin:

  • Instructors demonstrate how to place a margin around the tablet as shown in the illustration, about half or three quarters of an inch from the outer edge.
  • Use the second or long finger as a guide, as shown in the illustration.
  • Children practice drawing these margin lines until they can draw them without much effort.
  • Note: Many of the children will learn how to do this by seeing the teacher draw the margin, but others will have to be shown how by placing their hand and fingers in position.
  • Children should draw these margins around each color drawing for the remainder of the lessons.

Children study the landscape image below and complete the following drill work:

  1. Black. Paint entirely with black.
  2. Blue and Orange. Paint the sky and mountain blue. Place a wash of orange over the land, and into this wash add the details with blue. Paint the tree with blue and orange.
  3. Yellow and Violet. Paint the sky and mountain violet. Place a wash of yellow over the ground and the tree. Darken the tree and ground with violet and add the details with both yellow and violet.
  4. Blue, Orange, and Yellow. Place a wash of orange over the sky and brighten it with yellow Paint the mountain a dark violet, and then place a light wash of orange over it. Paint the foreground including the tree with blue and modify with orange and yellow.
  5. Brown. Paint the entire drawing with brown.
  6. Blue. Paint the entire drawing with blue.

The instructor introduces the concept of the "graded wash:"

  • Graded Wash: A wash varying from light to heavy or heavy to light.
  • The graded wash may be considered the most important wash in color.
  • See A in the image below. Note how the wash is light at the top and darker at the bottom.

Children study the bottom image and complete the following drill work:

  1. Black. Make a graded wash A of black.
  2. Black. Color B entirely with black. First make a graded wash from light to heavy of black, and into this wash paint the road and trees.
  3. Brown. Paint entirely with brown. Paint first with a graded wash of brown and into it mark the details.
  4. Blue and Orange. Make first a graded wash of blue and over the lower part of it add a graded wash of orange. Into this wash paint the details with blue and orange.
  5. Red and Green. Place a graded wash of red over the whole and over it a similar wash of green. Paint the trees and details with green.
  6. Violet. Paint B entirely with violet.
